2008. The modern state of Syria encompasses the sites of several ancient kingdoms and empires. Its capital, Damascus, is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world. Nested in the Middle East it is home to a mix of ethnicities.
Exact figures are unknown but The UN estimates that at least 400,000 people have been killed in the conflict.
