Steve Henderson, sculptor, at his studio and home in the remote Walton backwaters.
The sound of birds at low tide on the Essex mud is glorious. Steve is a craftsman of great talent. With found pieces of wood, or new wood that he works with processes that he has developed over time, he creates sculptures of birds, fish, sometimes whales or narwhals, that come to life. Each is filled with character and personality and seems to interact with you as you look at it. It’s amazing. Steve grew up on the backwaters and is surrounded by his subjects. He knows the movements of the curlew, the curve of its neck, the tilt of its head, because he has been observing the birds that live on the estuary, or pass through on their migrations, forever.
